The challenge** [Bankin](https://bankin.com/)' is one of France's leading personal finance apps. By connecting to dozens of banks, it brings all user's accounts into a single view, helping them stay on top of their budget and credit, and rewards everyday spending with cashback. Premium features are available through its Plus and Pro subscriptions. The Android app is a mature product. The team has just modernized a large legacy codebase, and it works with a solid engineering process: a senior team that ships every one to two weeks, feature flags, fast hotfixes, and a crash rate that is well under control. One metric was not improving: ANRs - **A frozen screen is a business problem**: users open the app to check their balance and their latest transactions, and expect an immediate answer. Every second of waiting reduces their confidence in the app - **Google measures it**: Play ranks apps on the user-perceived ANR rate. Above the Google threshold, the app becomes less visible in the store. - **Crash reporters show the freeze, not the cause**: Crashlytics reported a large number of ANRs, many of them marked "Root cause unknown". The team knew the app froze, but not on which screen, or what was blocking it. ## **2. The Kotzilla solution** [The Kotzilla Platform](https://kotzilla.io/) is built on [Koin](https://insert-koin.io/), the #1 dependency injection framework for Android and Kotlin Multiplatform. In production, it records how each screen renders and which components the app builds behind it, on which thread and for how long. From this data, Kotzilla identifies the root cause of each freeze and generates the fix guidance. For Bankin', this translated into: - **78% fewer ANRs** on monitored sessions within a few releases. Kotzilla showed that the freezes came from initialization work running on the main thread, at startup and on the first screens, and ranked the components by the share of sessions they blocked. The team shipped the first fixes in the next beta and removed the main blockers release after release. - **Screen rendering 46% faster overall**, and the transaction list 15 times faster at P95. Bankin's own Android Vitals data confirmed it: the user-perceived ANR rate fell by more than 80% in the following months. - **Prevention as part of the release cycle**: Kotzilla identifies slow screens before they reach the ANR limit, and the team automated a weekly review of the current release with Claude Code and the Kotzilla MCP Server, which proposes the fixes. ## 3. Business impact For a finance app, trust is the product: users connect their bank accounts and some of them pay for Plus or Pro. A screen that freezes works against that trust, and an ANR rate above the Google threshold reduces the app's visibility on the Play Store. Bringing the rate back under the threshold after this first wave of fixes mattered on both counts.
